Description

A classic lasagna recipe with layers of noodles, meat, ricotta, and cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package Lasagna Noodles (Regular or no-boil)
  • 1 pound Ground Beef (Can substitute with ground turkey)
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage (Consider meat substitute for vegetarian version)
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 3 cloves Garlic (Minced)
  • 28 ounces Crushed Tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar (Can substitute with honey)
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Basil (Fresh basil can be used as substitute)
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 15 ounces Ricotta Cheese (Mixing in an egg helps stabilize)
  • 1 large Egg (Can substitute with a flax egg for vegan)
  • 2 cups Shredded Mozzarella
  • 1/2 cup Grated Parmesan (Pecorino can be a good substitute)
  • Fresh Basil Leaves (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente, then drain.
  3. Brown ground beef and Italian sausage in a skillet over medium heat; drain excess fat.
  4. Sauté diced onion and minced garlic in the skillet until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, dried basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. Combine ricotta cheese and egg in a bowl until well mixed.
  7. Spread a layer of meat sauce in a baking dish, followed by a layer of noodles and a scoop of ricotta mixture.
  8. Repeat the layering process, finishing with a layer of noodles and meat sauce topped with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan.
  9. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  10. Rest the lasagna for 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired.

Notes

  • Mixing in an egg with ricotta helps stabilize the mixture.
  • A flax egg can be used as a vegan substitute for the egg.
  • Pecorino can be a good substitute for Parmesan.
