Description

A hearty and creamy dish featuring Italian sausage and orzo pasta.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy, your choice)
  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the Italian sausage and break it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Remove excess grease if necessary.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the orzo and cook for 1 minute with the sausage and onions to absorb some flavors.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes or until the orzo is tender, stirring occasionally.
  5. After the orzo is cooked, stir in the heavy cream, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix until combined and heated through. If desired, top with fresh parsley and grated Parmesan before serving.

Notes

  • This dish is versatile; feel free to add vegetables like spinach or bell peppers.
  • For added flavor, use homemade chicken broth if possible.
