Description
A rich and moist dark chocolate cake perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
- 2/3 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 3 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- 1/3 cup whole milk (for frosting)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Prepare the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until well combined. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.
- Bake the Cake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Make the Frosting: In a medium bowl, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the milk. Beat until the frosting is smooth and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting over the top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake evenly.
Notes
- For an even richer flavor, use high-quality dark cocoa powder and vanilla extract.
- To enhance the chocolate flavor, you can add a teaspoon of espresso powder to the batter.
- Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before starting for the best texture.
- If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached. If too thin, add more powdered sugar.
